No more wrestling a harness on over a winter coat.

  • One thing to put on instead of two: the harness is sewn into the coat, so the lead clips straight onto the metal ring on the back.
  • Warm and dry in the same layer: a quilted, water-repellent shell over a soft fleece lining, with a collar that stands up around the neck.
  • Easy to pick out at four o'clock in December: reflective webbing runs the length of both harness straps.
  • Seven sizes, from a Chihuahua to a Labrador: chest measurements run from 36cm up to 72cm, and the chart comes up small, so most owners take the next size up.
  • Over the back, zip, out the door: it opens flat rather than pulling over the head, so there are no legs to thread through anything.

How the harness is built in

A normal winter coat gives you two jobs. Coat on first, then a harness over the top, then five minutes flattening the straps that have twisted underneath.

Here the straps are part of the coat. A padded band crosses the chest, a clasp closes it, and a metal ring sits on the back between the shoulders. Clip the lead to the ring and that is the whole routine.

What the reflective strips look like from a car

Under a streetlight in January, a dog in a dark coat is just a shape at knee height. Drivers see the person first and work out the rest afterwards.

The webbing on this one throws headlights straight back. What a driver picks up is two bright lines moving along the pavement, well before they pick out your dog.

Half past six, dark, and raining again

Your dog is already circling by the front door. You are in your coat with a lead in one hand.

Lay this over their back, run the zip up the side, snap the chest clasp shut. Clip on and go. The whole thing takes about as long as putting your own boots on.

Questions

Which size should I order?

Measure two things with a tape. Around the chest at the widest point just behind the front legs, and along the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Chest is the one that decides it.

Then go up. This chart comes up small: if your dog lands between two sizes, or lands exactly on one, take the larger. Chests run from 36cm on the S to 72cm on the 4XL.

Is it warm enough for a proper cold walk?

This is a padded winter coat rather than a light shell. The outer is quilted and filled, the whole inside is lined with soft fleece, and the collar stands up to cover the neck.

It is cut for January mornings and frozen fields. On a mild autumn evening it will be more than your dog needs.

Does it keep the rain off?

The outer fabric is treated so water beads up and runs off instead of soaking through to the fleece. It covers the back, the sides and the chest, which is where the rain lands on a walk.

Give it a shake at the door and it comes in a good deal drier than your companion's legs.

How does it go on?

It opens right out flat. Lay it along the back, bring the two sides together underneath, run the zip up the side and close the chest clasp.

Nothing goes over the head and no paw has to be lifted through a hole, which is why dogs who object to being dressed tend to put up with this one.
