Your dog can look up on a bright day: the stitched brim sits forward and throws a shadow straight across the eyes.
The ears stay where they belong: two wide openings in the crown let them through instead of pinning them flat.
It fits the dog you actually have: four sizes run from a Chihuahua at 5kg through to a Great Dane at 80kg.
You set it twice, then leave it: a fastening tab at the back takes in the crown and an elastic cord under the chin takes up the rest.
The photos come out well: heavy cotton twill holds the cap shape rather than folding flat the moment it goes on.

Why a dog cap needs holes in it

Put a human cap on a dog and it has nothing to grip. The ears push it up from underneath, the crown sits on fur, and the first step sends it over one eye.

This one has the ears through it. Once they are out of the openings, the band is sitting on the skull between them, and the cord under the chin holds it down against a nose that wants to go up.

The first properly warm Saturday

Everyone is out. There is nowhere shaded to sit and your dog is squinting up at you from the end of the leash, waiting to see whether you are going home.

A brim solves the smaller half of that in about four seconds. The rest of it is the reaction from the next table.

It is a cap, not a helmet

This is made for a sunny hour: the garden, the terrace, a walk at walking pace, the photo you were always going to take.

A dog who plants their feet and shakes hard will get it sideways, and no cord under a chin is going to stop that. If your companion spends the walk headfirst in a hedge, this is not the thing to send them out in.

Which size does my dog take?

Small suits a dog up to about 5kg: a Chihuahua, a Yorkshire Terrier, a Dachshund, a Shih Tzu. Medium covers 6 to 10kg, so a Pug, a French Bulldog, a Corgi, a Beagle or a Pomeranian.

Large runs from 11 to 36kg, which takes in a Rottweiler, a Border Collie, an Australian Shepherd or a Labradoodle. Extra Large goes from 37kg to 80kg for a Golden Retriever, a German Shepherd, a Pitbull or a Great Dane.

How do I measure to be sure?

Two numbers, and neither of them is round the head. First, the gap between the inside edges of the ears. Second, the arch: lay the tape over the top of the skull from the outside of one ear to the outside of the other, following the curve rather than cutting straight across it.

S is 3cm and 11cm. M is 4cm and 13cm. L is 4.5cm and 18cm. XL is 5cm and 19.5cm. The arch is the one people get wrong, because measured flat it reads short, and that is how a big dog ends up in a Medium.

Does it stay on while my dog moves around?

Through a walk, a sit and a wander round the garden, yes, once the ears are properly through the openings and the chin cord is drawn up. Getting the size right does most of the work here.

Through a hard shake of the head, no. Treat it as sun kit for a relaxed hour rather than something to leave on all day.

What is it made of?

Heavy cotton twill, close to a light denim in weight and handle. The brim is stitched in rings, which is what keeps it flat and pointing forward.

The whole cap weighs about 50g at the largest size, so there is very little sitting up there.
