The one they grab by the neck and refuse to drop.

  • Easy for a small mouth to get hold of: the long neck is the handle, and the ring around it is soft towelling rather than stiff cloth.
  • The squeak is what brings them back: it sits inside the body, so every shake pays off with a noise your dog caused.
  • Light enough to be carried all evening: there is very little stuffing in it, so it comes off the basket and goes wherever your dog goes.
  • A game to play, not a chew to leave out: the body is woven cloth, so it suits dogs who carry and shake more than dogs who settle down and shred.
  • The one they go and fetch themselves: dogs who like having something in their mouth tend to pick this one out and keep hold of it.

Why the neck is the whole design

Watch a dog with a soft toy and they nearly always take it by the narrowest part, then shake. It is the oldest game there is and the shape either allows it or it does not.

This one is built around that. A flat body, wide wings, and a long thin neck that a Westie puppy can close a mouth around and swing.

The one you would pick is not the one they would

You are looking at a linen goose in a colour that will not fight with the sofa. That is a perfectly good reason to buy it.

Your dog is not looking at any of that. They have found something with a handle at one end and a noise in the middle, and the colour has never once come into it.

The ten minutes after you sit down

You get in, you drop onto the sofa, and your dog arrives with something in their mouth wanting the evening to start.

This is a good thing for that to be. Light enough to throw across a living room, soft enough to land on your lap, and loud enough that your little one knows it worked.

Questions

Will my dog take to it?

If your dog already picks up soft toys and shakes them, yes. The squeaker does most of the work, and the neck gives them the grip to swing it about.

Squeeze it once in front of them the first time. That is usually all the introduction it needs.

Is it a good size for a puppy or a small dog?

It is about thirty centimetres from bill to tail, and most of that is neck and wings rather than bulk. A West Highland Terrier puppy can carry it comfortably.

It works just as well for a Cocker Spaniel or a young German Shepherd, who tend to take it by the body instead.

What is the fabric like?

Woven cloth with the look and feel of a light canvas, not fluffy pile. It does not hold hair or smell the way a furry toy does.

It is made up in two layers, so there is a second skin of fabric under the outer one rather than stuffing straight behind it.

Is it right for a strong chewer?

This one is built for carrying, shaking and squeaking. Dogs who like to hold something get the most out of it.

If your dog's habit is to lie down and take a toy apart on purpose, a solid rubber chew is the better buy for them and this is better kept as the toy you throw.
