Something to squeeze, something to chase, something that squeaks back.

  • Your dog gets a noise they made happen: a big squeaker sits in the middle, and it takes a proper bite to set it off.
  • It bounces like a ball, not a beanbag: there is a springy rubber core under the plush, so a drop on a hard floor sends it off at an angle nobody predicted.
  • Two sizes, so any mouth can carry it: 6cm across for a small dog to pick up in one go, 12cm for a bigger one to pin down with a paw.
  • It comes back out of the toy box next week: dense plush stitched over a solid core, with no loose fibre filling to pull out.
  • Three monsters to pick from: each one has its own face, from a one-eyed green one to a three-eyed pink one to a blue one that looks faintly appalled.

Why the squeak has to be earned

A toy that squeaks when you look at it stops being interesting by Thursday. This one needs real pressure before it goes off.

That turns it into a job. Your dog bites down, the noise comes, and the noise is proof the bite worked. Then they do it again, which is the whole of what a good toy has to do.

The one you would pick is not the one they would

You are choosing a face. Your best friend is choosing a texture: long soft pile that teeth can actually get hold of, wrapped round something with give underneath.

That combination is why a plush ball beats a hard one for most dogs. It is soft enough to carry around all evening and solid enough to be worth chasing.

Half past four, and it is raining again

The walk is not happening for another hour and your dog has already checked the front door twice.

Throw this down a hallway. It bounces off skirting boards, it squeaks when it lands wrong, and it buys you the ten minutes you were after.

Questions

Is it made for a strong chewer?

It is built to be bitten. The plush is a tight pile over a solid rubber ball rather than a loose bag of stuffing, which is what usually gives way first on a soft toy.

Bite resistant is the right description, not indestructible. It takes daily work from a dog who gets through most soft toys and stays in one piece.

Which size should I get?

The small one is 6cm across, about the size of a plum. That suits a Chihuahua, a Yorkshire Terrier, a Dachshund or a puppy, and it is easy to carry around the house.

The large one is 12cm, closer to a grapefruit, and is the one for a Spaniel, a Collie or a Labrador. Go large if you are unsure: it is the size a dog can hold down with a paw.

How loud is the squeak?

Loud. It is a large squeaker rather than the small flat sort, and it carries across a room.

It only goes off under a firm squeeze, though, so it stays quiet when your dog is just carrying it about.

What is inside it?

A soft rubber ball and a large squeaker, wrapped in a plush skin with the face, horns and ears sewn on the outside.

The whole thing weighs 90 to 110 grams depending on size, so it is light enough to throw indoors without taking a lamp out.
