He can't predict it, and that's the whole game.

  • A chase he can't work out — press the plastic dome inside out, set it down, and it flips itself into the air a moment later.

  • You'll know when to call time on it — it's a plastic shell over a spring, so the moment he settles down to chew it instead of chase it, take it off him.

How it gets off the ground

There is no motor in it. You push the dome inside out and put it down, and the tension held in the plastic does the rest — a second or two later it snaps back and throws itself up.

The delay is the useful part. He can't time it, so it doesn't go stale the way a thrown ball goes stale.

The bit before it goes

He drops into a crouch. Ears forward, weight on his front legs, eyes locked on a plastic disc that is doing nothing at all.

Then it goes, and so does he. That pause is about as close as your garden gets to the second before something bolts in a field.

Questions

Will my dog actually chase it?

If he reacts to things that move, yes — the launch is sudden and he cannot see it coming.

Dogs who would rather pick a toy up and carry it around get less out of it, and a dog who startles at sharp noises may not enjoy the snap it makes as it flips.

Will it survive my dog?

It stands up to being chased, pounced on and knocked around the lawn. It does not stand up to being chewed — a dog who lies down and works at it will crack the shell.

There is a spring inside, so a cracked one goes in the bin rather than back in the toy box. Play with it, then put it away.

Does it need batteries?

The jump is spring-powered, so that part needs nothing at all. The lights run off a button battery inside the shell.

The toy is very cool but it lasted 2 minutes for my dog. It started to bend and apart from the suction cup stopping sticking after two uses when throwing it, the spring came out of the toy when it broke. It can be dangerous for the animal if you are not at home. Small dogs maybe and with supervision.
